Claes Johnson KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden claesjohnson@gmail.com To Dr. Felix Plasser, Handling Editor International Journal of Quantum Chemistry Dear Dr. Plasser, I resubmit manuscript 1568909, now titled "A 3D Multiphase Continuum Model for Atoms and the Periodic Table", in response to the two referee reports. A point-by-point response accompanies this letter. The revision is substantial, and where the referees were right the material is gone rather than defended: the calibrated core radius and the constants it carried, all ionization-energy material, and the "4s before 3d" claim are withdrawn. Every atom is now solved all-electron, with the nuclear charge Z as the only quantity supplied. What replaces that material is an account of the periodic table built from two filled packings, and it is the answer to a question Reviewer 2 put rather than an addition made alongside the revision. That is also why the title has been extended. One matter needs your judgement. The manuscript has grown from 13 pages to 35. The response letter gives the reason -- a construction of this kind is checkable only if it is set out completely -- but if you consider the paper too long I am willing to shorten it, and would propose cutting the discussion of packing versus orbitals and the more expository passages, leaving the construction, the tables and the figures intact. On the author guidelines: the abstract is 145 words, within the 150-word limit, with no bold-face elements and no numerical literature references. A graphical abstract image and graphical abstract text within the 50-word limit are included. I am grateful to both referees. The paper is better for the objections. Yours sincerely, Claes Johnson Professor Emeritus of Applied Mathematics KTH Royal Institute of Technology
